In RSMOne's words
A laboratory measuring protein content in a grain lot records an Observation, with the lab as Observer and the lot as Subject. The Observation says what was measured; it does not by itself explain why, or establish that an Outcome occurred.
What it is not
Observation ≠ Claim
An Observation records what was perceived or measured; a Claim is a proposition attributed to a source, and recording one does not create the other. 04 §10.6 · Assertion
Observation ≠ Evidence
An Observation records what was observed; Evidence is information used to support, challenge or evaluate a proposition, so an Observation may serve as Evidence without the two becoming the same thing. 04 §10.3 · Evidence
